While the world is still trying to combat the catastrophic pandemic of coronavirus, China has already revealed another deadly virus named Hantavirus. According to a tweet made by China’s Global Times, a man from Yunnan province was tested positive to the new virus on Monday, March 23, 2019, and died hours after that. He was reportedly traveling by a bus along with 32 co-passengers in Yunnan province, when he suddenly died. The tests revealed the presence of the deadly Hantavirus in his body. The co-passengers have been tested for the same and the results are yet to come.

The news has already taken the social media by storm and people are fearing that it is another COVD-19 waiting to unleash its wrath on the planet. Let’s try and understand what exactly is Hantavirus and how close it is to COVD-19: According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Hantavirus is caused by rodents and can be transmitted to humans who come in contact with them. The description on the website reads, “Rodent infestation in and around the home remains the primary risk for hantavirus exposure. Even healthy individuals are at risk for HPS infection if exposed to the virus.”
The virus can lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Thankfully the disease is not airborne and can only spread if people come in contact with urine, feces, and saliva of an infected host/rodent. Unlike novel coronavirus, it is not communicable from one human to another, but rather from rodents to humans.
According to the CDC a person can test positive if they have touched their eyes, nose or mouth after touching rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials.

Symptoms of Hantavirus:
Fever greater than 101◦F, chills, body aches, headaches.
Nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain.
New rash (faint red spots)
A dry cough followed by rapid onset of breathing difficulty.
Lungs fill with fluid
Clearly the outbreak is still at a very nascent stage and the virus isn’t as deleterious as COVD-19. Instead of falling prey to rumours and chaos spread by social media platforms such as whatsapp and facebook, lets keep calm bearing the aforementioned facts in mind and stay put at our homes peacefully and patiently.
